| Communities and Local Government (CLG) | Communities and Local Government is the National Government department responsible for: cities and regions; creating better communities; equalities; fire and resilience; housing; local government; planning; building and the environment and the Thames Gateway & Olympic legacy. | ||||
| Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) | The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs is the national government department responsible for: animal health & welfare; environmental protection; farming; marine & fisheries; food & drink; horticulture plants & seeds; rural affairs; science; sustainable development and wildlife & countryside. | ||||
| Government Office for the South East (GOSE) | The Government Office for the South East represents central government in the region and its role is to promote better and more effective integration of Government policies and programmes at a regional and local level. | ||||
| South East England Regional Assembly (SEERA) | The South East England Regional Assembly is the representative voice of the region. It comprises 112 members, including elected councillors nominated by the region's local authorities. The Assembly has responsibilities for advocacy, accountability, planning and policy in the region. | ||||
| Planning Advisory Service (PAS) | The Planning Advisory Service is a government funded agency committed to helping councillors navigate the challenges of planning issues while making the most of the planning system. PAS runs a number of events and produces guidance to help members in their roles. | ||||
| Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) | The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment champions well-designed buildings and public space. They run public campaigns, and provide expert, practical advice. They work directly with planners, designers, clients and architects, offering them guidance on projects that will shape all our lives. | ||||
| Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) | The Royal Town Planning Institute's vision for planning is that it must: deal with the unique needs and characteristics of places; look at short, medium and long term social, economic and environmental effects; integrate the knowledge, objectives and actions involved; recognise the wide range of people involved in planning; be value-driven by being concerned with identifying, understanding and mediating conflicting sets of values and be driven by the twin activities of mediating space and making of place. | ||||
| Wealden Local Strategic Partnership | The Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) brings together organisations from the public, private, business, voluntary and community sectors so that they can support each other and work together. It is aligned with Wealden District Council boundaries. The LSP produced and updates the Wealden Community Strategy. | ||||
Key Concepts and Components of the LDF |

| Local Development Framework (LDF) | The Local Development Framework will eventually supersede the Wealden Local Plan adopted in 1998 and the Non-statutory Wealden Local Plan approved in 2005 and together with the regional spatial strategy will provide the framework for planning in Wealden. Local Development Frameworks are based upon spatial planning and take into account other relevant strategies and programmes such Wealden's Community Strategy. | ||||
| Local Development Scheme | This scheme is the document which the public can use to find out what the Council is proposing to do and when, and at what stage they can expect to be involved in the planning process. |

| Core Strategy | The Core Strategy is a key component of the Local Development Framework as it will set out the Council’s long-term spatial vision for the District and the strategic policies that will be required to deliver that vision. It will set out broad locations for housing, business and other strategic development (such as employment and transport provision) and will contain key Development Control policies. | ||||
| Design Guide | The Design Guide is a Supplementary Planning Document that will contain guidance with regard to achieving a high quality of design in new development within the District. It will encourage the creation of an attractive and sustainable environment and maintain and enhance the District’s unique and distinctive character. | ||||
| Sustainability Appraisal | A Sustainability Appraisal evaluates the social, economic and environmental impacts of policies and strategies in a Local Development Document to ensure that the policies and strategies are in accordance with Sustainable Development objectives. | ||||
| Development Plan Documents | These documents set out the main planning policies for the area, and must include a Core Strategy and site specific allocations of land. | ||||
| Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) | These documents may expand policy or provide further detail to policies contained within a development plan document. | ||||
Site Allocations |
The Site Allocations deals with the development of land or buildings on sites within the borough which may come forward during the lifetime of the Local Development Framework | ||||
Community Strategy |
The strategy represents the Community's local vision for making Wealden an even better place to live and work. Wide consultation with the public prodcued a document considering eight key themes: the Environment, Health and Social Care, Housing, Learning, Leisure, Prosperity, Safety and Transport. | ||||
Local Plan / South East Plan |
The South East Plan is a new type of planning document produced by the South East England Regional Assembly (SEERA). It sets out a vision for the future of the South East region to 2026, outlining how we need to respond to challenges facing the region such as housing, the economy, transport and protecting the environment. The aim aim is to ensure that the South East remains economically successful and an attractive place to live for future generations | ||||
Sustainable Development |
Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. | ||||
Rural Proofing |
Ensuring that policy meets the needs of people who live in rural areas who have different circumstances to those living in urban areas, such as isolation, communication barriers (transport, internet, acccessibility to services) economic needs and employment. | ||||
Super Output Areas |
Super Output Areas (SOAs) are a new geographic hierarchy designed to improve the reporting of small area statistics in England and Wales. Their first statistical application was for the Indices of Deprivation 2004, giving them instant publicity and usage across the local government sector . | ||||
